Agriculture Emissions Consultation Hui
The Ministry for the Environment and Ministry of Primary Industries ran a consultation hui on Monday at the TSB Hub. This hui provided a forum for those interested in proposed policies that intend to address greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture to learn about this kaupapa, and ensure they were suitably informed to enable them to make a submission. Te Korowai attended, and listened to the concerns of those present, who on the whole represented the farming community. Te Korowai will be making a submission, asking for assurance that Māori land owners will be adequately considered, that the policies are truly incentive based, so there is less cost for those who are taking steps to reduce emissions and that farmers offset actions are considered, including the planting of riparian margins, but also ensuring this process does not push landowners to plant exotics rather than natives, so that biodiversity gains can be made at the same time.
