Key Board Messages – 19 Mahuru / September 2023
Wānanga whakatau – Induction of the new Te Korowai o Ngāruahine Board
Over the weekend, the newly elected Te Korowai o Ngāruahine Trust Board (Board) engaged in a wānanga whakatau (immersive induction workshop) at Te Aroha o Tītokowaru Marae.
A key theme that fell out of the wānanga was that of mua and muri. Here, we present the key messages from this wānanga:
Ka mua, ka muri – Walking backwards into the future
- The Board prioritised a haerenga around some of our Ngāruahine areas of significance. This was a chance to hear kōrero tuku iho, reflect on our tūpuna, share fond memories and bond as a Board.
- Much of the wānanga was understanding the journey of Te Korowai and it’s role of serving our Iwi. This included the mahi of the previous Boards, particularly, the amazing mahi over the last term. A special mihi to previous Board members; Allen Webb, John Hooker, John (Haney) Kahupukoro, Te Aroha Hohaia, Caroline Scot and Grant Weston.
- The Board extends its gratitude to Paula Carr for the unwavering support during her term as the Pouwhakarae from 2020-23 and as a current Trustee. Paula’s commitment to developing and executing a robust strategy has allowed Te Korowai to fulfil its vision, and solidify the foundation to serve our Iwi. The recent AGM and Annual Report is a testament to her perseverance, and the range and scale of successful kaupapa that were initiated under her leadership. Two significant kaupapa include;
o Te Ara Toiroa (Iwi procurement strategy), ensuring strong succession and an unapologetic approach to privileging our own people; and
o Pupuke te Hihiri (Impact investment strategy), ensuring we invest in kaupapa that not only create economic returns, but social, environmental and cultural benefits.
The above strategies are first of their kind for any iwi, and is the impetus for the growth of Te Kīwai Mauī o Ngāruahine (Mauī) mahi over the next three years. We are privileged to have Paula’s skills and experience in supporting the new Pouwhakarae, new Trustees, and our strategic priorities under Mauī as their appointed Trustee Director.
Te hapai ō ki muri – Operations and support
- The freshly appointed Board forged valuable connections with the tari (operations) team, effectively bridging the gap between their roles and the Board’s responsibilities.
- The Board embarked on a journey of knowledge acquisition through a range of facilitated sessions. These sessions included governance training facilitated by Te Aroha Hohaia, indemnity cover led by Crombie Lockwood’s Malcolm Win, and finance essentials delivered by Te Korowai Pouhāpai, Emma Park. Assisted by Lara Keane, the Board identified areas for professional and personal growth, establishing a strong foundation for the Board to explore their governance journey.
Te amorangi ki mua – Board Trustees and appointments
- Te Ara Toiroa, commitment to development and succession. The new Trustees are diverse, and have a wide range of skills and experiences. A tuakana teina approach to support new Trustees and leverage off the wisdom of seasoned Trustees was the general approach to the appointments of Trustee roles and responsibilities.
